Outside Cairo, near Egypt's first pyramid, lies Saqqara, city of the dead, where French archaeologist Alain Zivie has unearthed tombs from Egypt's New Kingdom. For two years, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC followed Zivie's team into an underground labyrinth, discovering the tomb of an ambassador from the reign of Ramses II. Rare artifacts in another chamber, filled with cat mummies, suggest it belonged to a royal nurse of pharaoh-to-be Tutankhamen.
